These examples are taken from the 'Spotters's Guide to Horses & Ponies' by Usborne Pocketbooks. They show basic horse markings and some specific breeds, to act as a guide to painting your own horses.
Chestnut, brown and bay horses are common. Most horses will have a white mark on the face. Most horses have white markings on the leg, mostly 1, 2 or 3 legs will be marked, rarely none or all.

Colour Party Paints do an excellent range of horse colour's acrylic paints. I find these work well as a thinned paint over a horse under-coated white or yellow, so that the under-coat is allowed to show through on the highlights
